An Australian hair care startup is looking to use a natural hair colour to boost its colour in customers’ hair.
Key points:It’s using the hair dye Dye-O-Lite to boost the colour of hairColour boosting technology is the brainchild of CEO Matthew HintonColour-boosting technology is based on the idea of changing the way cells make melanin, the pigment that gives our hair its colourBonding natural hair to hair dye has been around for years, but a recent trial involving a company based in the United States showed that using the dye to make the hair of an older woman more healthy is possible.
It’s a hair dye that has been used to treat melanoma and has already been tested in the clinic, but it’s the technology behind the product that’s really exciting.
Key features: It uses a hair colour known as Dye O-Lites to boost hair colour in a patient’s hair, creating a natural colour similar to that of the hair colour itselfColourboosting, which is based in New Zealand, uses the natural colour to colour the hair naturallyIt works with an enzyme in the hair’s natural hair fibre, to turn melanin into a colour that’s similar to the hair it is attached toThe company behind Dye Lites says that this is possible because the enzyme used in dye-making can be made by living organisms and can’t be produced by a chemical method.
“If you’re interested in creating the perfect natural hair product, you’re really interested in the natural ingredients and how they’re related to your hair colour,” Dye Labs CEO Matthew Harms told ABC News.
“I think it’s really interesting because if we can get the hair to grow naturally, you might be able to make a product that gives you the best results.”
Mr Harms said that the technology could potentially be used to boost a patient in a number of ways.
“For example, you could make a hair product that changes the colour that your hair naturally has, and if you change your colour a little bit, you’ll get a different effect,” he said.
“It’s possible to do that with the enzyme.”‘
The hair is the ultimate ingredient’When a person’s hair colour changes from a natural blonde to a reddish brown, the enzyme that makes melanin is able to convert the hair strands into different shades.
When the dye is applied to the strands of hair, it produces a colour similar in colour to the colour the strands were originally attached to.
“That gives the dye a different look,” Mr Harms explained.
“You get this brownish colour that really matches the colour in the original hair.”
However, this can’t happen with dye-containing hair products, because those rely on the enzyme’s ability to convert natural melanin to dye-bearing melanin.
“We know that the enzyme in your hair is actually an enzyme that does not do that,” he explained.
“So, if you apply dye-based products to your scalp, you end up with brown hair.”
The only way to get a true natural colour is to use the hair-dye.
So, if it’s a natural dye, it’s going to give you brown hair.
“The idea for colour boosting came to Mr Harams in 2014, when he started noticing that many of his friends and colleagues were getting hair colour problems.”
So, I decided to give it a go and see what I could do with it,” he told ABC Radio National’s Insiders programme.”
We did a few trials in the lab, and found that there were some pretty good results.
“He tested out the technology on a few different types of hair and saw that it was working.”
People were getting much better, they were getting their hair colour back,” he added.”
Then, I realised that I had a lot of patients who had a problem with browns and blacks.
“They didn’t like them.
They couldn’t stand them.”
He decided to try out the dye-boosted hair colour on those patients.
“One day I was in my lab in the middle of a lab, working on some hair samples, and there was this woman, a blonde blonde, and this brown blonde, who was really struggling,” he recalled.
“She said, ‘Why don’t you give me a natural brown?’
So I asked her, ‘What do you want?’.”
And she said, I want brown hair.’
So, as I was doing my experiments, I was thinking, ‘what if I made brown hair?’
“And I went to a hair salon and I said, if we give you some brown hair, can you give it to me?'”
She’s like, ‘No, you can’t.’
“I said, what do you mean?”
She looked at me and said, she has brown hair and she’s struggling because she doesn’t like
